ABSTRACT: The hypothesis that motivated the accomplishment of this research was: \textquotedblleft {the cold front passages are important events in the processes that control the hydrodynamics, thermal structure and mixture regime of the Itumbiara´s hydroelectric reservoir}\textquotedblright. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the influence of cold fronts passages on the physical processes within the water column in Itumbiara´s reservoir. In order to get a better understanding of the physical response in the reservoir a synergistic approach among remote sensing techniques, \textit{in situ} data (ground data and telemetric data) and three- dimensional hydrodynamic modelling was used. The period chosen for this study consists of 49 days between 28/04/2010 and 15/06/2010 and was defined based on information of Brazilian Centre for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC) and visual interpretation of GOES 12 images. During this period, five cold fronts passages were identified, which allowed us to analyze the cumulative effect of cold fronts and reservoir´s resilience in the days between passages. The surface heat fluxes obtained by MODIS Water Surface Temperature product (M*D11A1) showed that losses of sensible and latent heat can be up to four times greater during the occurrence of cold fronts than those observed in the days before and after the passages. The results of simulation performed with three-dimensional hydrodynamic model (Estuary, Lake and Coastal Ocean Model - ELCOM) showed that the cold fronts are able to change the direction of surface and subsurface currents, influencing the movement of water at different depths. Moreover, the cold front passages promote the erosion of thermocline, providing partial or complete mixing of the water column, and also changes the mixing regimes, that dominated by buoyancy forces becomes dominated by the wind stirring and convective processes. Thus, we conclude that the passages of cold fronts are important events that affect the hydrodynamics, thermal structure and mixture regime in Itumbiara´s hydroelectric reservoir. The effects of cold fronts passages may result in changes of water quality in reservoir. |
